MONTEPULCIANO – 8 km away from Monticchiello

Montepulciano is built along a narrow limestone ridge, at a height above sea level of 605 meters.

The village is surrounded by walls and fortifications designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder in 1500 for Cosimo I.

Montepulciano is known primarily for its imposing Renaissance palaces, for the elegant beauty of its churches and the Vino Nobile, one of the most popular Tuscan wines at international level. The village is spread along a course that climbs the hill to reach the central square, Piazza Grande, which is located at the top.

In July-August there is Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte, an artistic event created by the German composer Hans Werner Henze. In August, two other events enliven the life of the town: the Bruscello which is accounted for 14 , 15 and 16, when the actors reenact scenes from the history of the city and the Bravio “barrel show” which takes place on the last Sunday of August. On this occasion the districts compete, pushing butts along the slope of the course.
